Hyeokyeong enjoys all genres as long as it has a story but prefers the written form above all. She started writing book reports in school and evolved into writing fan fiction: short stories written from the viewpoint of her favorite characters. She self-published these stories in the form of books entitled Reverse-Observation Records (역관찰 기록) and A Creature in Management Office (관리실 내 유기체) but only for personal purposes.
She debuted as a writer in 2023 when her short story won the Grand Prize in the Third POSTECH SF Awards. Her stories, entitled “Exception from Sarcasm: Radio” (냉소제외대상: 라디오) and “Next Christmas in a Better Place” (내년 크리스마스는 더 나은 곳에서), were published in the collection of POSTECH SF Award Stories. Both works feature people who live in a post-apocalyptic world.
Hyeokyeong mainly writes stories that are somewhere among SF, horror and comedy. She calmly describes a colorfully ruined world using dystopia, post-apocalypse, creature feature are her favorite topics. Machines and monsters often appear in her works as symbols of meaninglessness and objects that cannot be understood and refuse understanding. She has a pessimistic sense of humor but pursues baseless hope at the same time. She has been mentoring a student group for SF creative writing at POSTECH since 2023.
