Byeongmo Gu majored in Korean language and literature. She began her writing career by winning the The Changbi Prize for Young Adult Fiction in 2008 with The Wizard Bakery (위저드 베이커리). The work is categorized as urban fantasy, for lack of better definition. The border between realism and fantasy means very little to Byeongmo as she crosses boundaries of numerous genres.
Among her works, The Old Woman with the Knife (파과, 2013), shows her style and characterstics. This is a humanist suspense action novel about an aging woman contract killer who is planning to retire. The work is awaiting publication in nine countries including USA, Britain, Japan, France and Italy.
Her other SF novels include A Spoonful of Time (한 스푼의 시간, 2016), where an AI robot comes to a neighborhood laundromat, and a philosophical novel entitled Through the Ivory Gate (상아의 문으로, 2021), which features "dream incubators" and "dream projectors" to analyze the images and symbolisms of nightmares in a sleepless city. Her short stories include "Eclipse Rain" (식우 蝕雨), where an endless acid rain overwhelms a city and people try to survive and escape against each other. Another short story entitled "Waken" (웨이큰) is about a programmer who dives into a virtual world where children have been trapped after a freak accident. And "Autopoiesis" (오토포이에시스) features a story-writing artificial intelligence in search of the ultimate perfect sentence.
