Seonran Cheon (천선란)

Seonran always pondered on the meaning of creative imagination while thinking about the end of the Earth and dreaming about things that could be happening somewhere in the universe. One day she decided that she should write these things down to make them into a story. For the most part Seonran spends her time imagining and is always writing something.

She started her writing career in September of 2019 when she published her nuclear apocalypse novel A Broken Bridge (무너진 다리). Also in 2019 she won the Grand Prize in the fourth Korea Science Fiction Award with her novel A Thousand Blues (천 개의 파랑). In 2020 her short story "Surf Beat" (서프비트) won the Super Minority Hero Contest. In July of 2020 Seonran published a collection of short stories entitled Some Shape of Love (어떤 물질의 사랑).

Seonran’s main topics are environmental destruction, the extinction of animal species, and virus. Her reviewers commented that A Broken Bridge "does not give in to the socio-political context and maintains its focus on the speculative elements and on the main characters' daily lives in spite of being set in an apocalyptic world. The author does not mindlessly follow the genre conventions; she creates her own meanings, which is a big plus. This may also be meaningful as a new form of dealing with the apocalypse in the 21st century."
