Jongsan Lee majored in Korean literature in college but took classes in creative writing at the department of creative literature as she did not like the conservative atmosphere of her own department. It was then that she started to read modern literature from Korea and abroad. In the following year she created a fiction writing club, which helped her to write a story about a woman named Marie who makes coffins, who visits a zoo to see a talking elephant, and coincidentally meets and falls in love with Dracula. This novel won the Grand Prize at the first Munhakdongne University Novel Award in 2012, thus marking her debut.
Two years later, She published her second novel The Lazy Life (게으른 삶) in 2014, and published "The Colorless Face" (색깔 없는 얼굴), a mystery novella, in installments in the webzine Munjang. She started writing about the story of a character named Suni who fights to live in a form that she wants in a world where genetic plastic surgery is possible. It is titled Customer (커스터머), which was published in October 2017.
This third novel, The Customer, is "a work that pulls in readers without removing the conflict that the minorities might face, in a fantasy world that the writer creates," according to the reviews. Customer won the first Queer Literary Award at the Korea Queer Comprehensive Literary Platform, Rainbow Bookmark, in December 2017. Her recent short story is entitled "Evidence that You Were Keeping the World Safe" (그동안 당신이 세계를 지키고 있었다는 증거) (Munhakdongnae, Spring Ed., 2016). The work was translated into English and published at Nabillera (web magazine, https://nabillerakorea.com), which is a quarterly literary journal that introduces Korean writers who debuted after the year 2000 to English-speaking countries.
Currently, Jongsan is working on a cycle of stories centered on the theme of a different dimension. She enjoys using the techniques and traditions of diverse genres, from romance, fantasy, mystery, detective novel to SF.
