Dana Lee (데이나)

Dana began writing by composing poetry in middle school and has been working as an essayist for media outlets since 2019. In college she trained as a classical pianist and also double-majored in mathematics. She began writing science fiction thanks to her significant other, who is a fan of the genre.

Her first attempt as a fiction writer, a short story entitled “The Penguin’s Voice” (펭귄의 목소리), won Second Prize in POSTECH SF Awards in 2023. As a poet she published her poem “Resonance” (공명) in the poetry collection Poetry, Beginnings (시, 시작), which was published as a joint project through Taling Contest in 2022.

Dana’s first story, “The Penguin’s Voice,” is based on the story of “I” and her significant other, who both suffer from depression. In this story, people communicate telepathically through a chip. The protagonists do not have chip implants and are considered communication-challenged. In this story Dana wanted to present the communication challenge as one comparable to depression. At the same time, she wanted to say that disability could happen to anybody and people become disabled according to the society’s definition of disability.

Dana likes to extrapolate from her personal experience and integrate it into her fiction. She is making various attempts at presenting the voice and the perceptions of minority. She also enjoys writing about the changes in science and technology in the near future.
