Era Seo (서애라)

Era wrote crime fiction when she was around ten years old, to her mother’s great distress. Afterwards Era wrote poetry to prove that she didn’t have mental health issues. As an adult she worked as an editor, a writing teacher for children, taught Korean as a foreign language, worked as an operational Manager of Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP) and so forth.

She has a master’s degree in multiculturalism and is an ABD in creative writing. She debuted as an SF writer and as a writer in mainstream literature in 2022 when she won the Hyun, Jin-gun New Writers Award and the SF StoryCon Contest in the short stories category.

“My Mother’s Name is Banda” (엄마의 이름은 반다) is about a girl whose mother is a mermaid. The jury commented that “her writing is stable” and “her ideas are interesting” and that Era is “a very well-trained, capable writer.” “When She Dead Awakens” is a story set in the future where former caregivers are waken from cryopreservation to be utilized as caregiver workforce. The jury praised the story as “a fresh and timely fiction” which shows “a very science fiction-esque expansion of viewpoint.”

Era mainly conducts sociological thought experiments and understands SF as a broad territory. She is very interested in exploring and deconstructing borders between poetry, fiction, drama and other narrative genres.
