Myung-hoon Bae (배명훈)

Myung-hoon Bae discovered the joy of writing and presenting one’s own piece to readers right after he learned how to read. However, having no artist or creator to mentor him, he did not become a professional writer until later. He majored in international politics and studied the First World War for his master’s degree. This naturally led him to write stories about entire worlds. His works were noticed in the SF field and he won the Science Technology Creative Literature Award in the Short Stories category in 2005.

His first novel, Tower (타워), was published in 2009 and the wider literary community fell in love with it. As a result, in 2010 Myung-hoon became the first winner of the Young Writers Award hosted by Munhakdongne, one of the major literary publishers in Korea. He has since published more than a dozen SF stories, including novels such as The First Breath (첫숨), Archeopscychicist (고고심령학자), Launch Something! (빙글빙글 우주군) and a short story collection entitled Art and the Acceleration of Gravity (예술과 중력가속도). Tower was translated into English and was published in Great Britain in 2021.

He wrote a number of stories from the viewpoint of social sciences, especially with a focus on politics and power. In 2020, per request of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myung-hoon conducted research on a planetwide governance system on Mars after human settlement. He is continuously writing stories about a city on Earth and in space with five hundred thousand citizens and is most vigorously writing stories about ordinary Koreans’ lives smoothly shifting to science fiction.
